October 2021: This and That from the CGC President

Updated: Oct 18, 2021

A District VI Fall Meeting

The District VI Fall meeting in Midland October 2 provided fun and education under the direction of Kathy Sauber, District VI Director and member of the Caro Garden Club.

Donna Frawley and Irene Brown, co-presidents of the Evergreen Garden Club, organized the collective efforts of eight garden clubs to make the day-long event a success: Caro Garden Club, Chemical City Garden Club, Evening Bloomers Garden Club, Evergreen Garden Club, Great Lakes Gardeners, The Little Garden Club, Mount Pleasant Garden Club and Touch the Earth Garden Club.

The honored guest was Monica Taylor, president of Michigan State Garden Clubs. The beautiful day was wrapped up with a tour of Whiting Forest Canopy Walk.

Tuscola County Pumpkin Festival

It’s not too soon to start thinking about the 2022 Tuscola County Pumpkin Festival. The Caro Garden Club had a float and members walked in the festival parade in 2019. But the 2020 festival was canceled due to the pandemic, and our club missed an opportunity to get some free advertising in 2021 when the festival was reinstated.

No Room for Weeds

Intensive planting helps reduce maintenance, says Hans Hansen, who has bred some 450 plants found in garden centers across the United States and overseas. “When things are planted that close together, there’s nothing to do but deadhead or edit. There’s no room for weeds.” One of the top plant breeders around the globe, Hansen lives in Zeeland, Michigan.
