Check and Clean Your Bird Houses
While over-wintering birds are known to occasionally spend cold nights in man-made bird houses, from my experience bird houses often become infested with mice during the winter. A long-handled barbeque brush with stiff bristles and scraper is great for cleaning out old nesting materials and evicting mice. Leave the bird house doors open for the winter to discourage mice from returning. You can close them up in the spring when birds return for nesting.
2021 Marks the Bicentennial of Santa Claus in America
The year 2021 marks the bicentennial of Santa Claus in America. According to Tom Jerman, author of the book Santa Claus Worldwide: A History of St. Nicholas and Other Gift-Bringers, the first published story in Americaabout Santa Claus appeared in 1821 in an eight-page children’s book produced in New York. But it wasn’t until Clement C. Moore’s poem now known as The Night Before Christmas was published in 1823 in a New York newspaper that Santa Claus got wide-spread attention from the American public.
Happy Holidays everyone!
