March can come in like a lamb and leave like a lion (or vice versa) in the Northwest climate. Never the less, now is the perfect time to take advantage of those horticulture catalogs to start planning your garden.
If you have not done so already, start a garden journal. It’s a great tool for improving your garden systematically over the years.
Some practical ideas for Michiganders in the month of March:
• Send a sample of your garden soil into your local county extension so that they can test it.
• Avoid walking across your garden when the soil is wet. Trending all over it can lead to compaction, which can hinder root penetration and cause poor drainage.
• Prune shrubs that flower on new wood.
• Trim back ornamental grass stalks to clear room for new growth.
• Spray your fruit trees.
• Remove burlap from evergreens.
The Winds of March
The winds of March are wild and strong,
They howl and whistle all day long;
They pull the hats from tall men’s heads
And frighten children in their beds.
They brush the trees, they sweep the ground,
I’m glad no seedlings can be found,
For March would hurt each leaf and stem-
But April – time was made for them!
