Food for thought:
According to Webster dictionary, horticulture is the cultivation of a garden, orchard, or nursery: the cultivation of flowers, fruits, vegetables, or ornamental plants, and the science and art of cultivating such plants.
The horticultural industry can be divided into three areas: pomology, olericulture and ornamental horticulture. Pomology is the planting, harvesting, storing, processing and marketing of fruits and nuts. Olericulture includes planting, harvesting, storing, processing and marketing of vegetable crops. Ornamental horticulture consists of floriculture and landscape horticulture. Each is concerned with growing and marketing plants for floral arrangement and landscape design.
Horticulture is important because it improves how we use plants for food, our enjoyment, as well as repairing the environment. Plants are very important in environmental protection. They are used to revegetate and restore land distributed by human, or natural activities. They control erosion and help to clean the air and water. Provide food and residence for our birds, pollinators and wildlife. Plants also have an important role in the beautification of city and country landscapes and recreation areas.
Whether you live in an urban or rural area, we all benefit from good horticultural practices.
Happy August Birthday to Charlene and Peter!
August Cheers,
