Greetings fellow gardeners.
November is here-the leaves are falling and it’s getting colder and wetter. As autumn turns to winter, your main jobs in the garden are mostly about protecting plants and structures from the briskly weather to come. Here are a few tips to consider.
• Insulate your outdoor containers from frost using hessian or bubble wrap held in place with gardening twin.
• Raise pots off ground for winter by using bricks or “pot Feet” to prevent waterlogging.
• Aerate your lawn now
• Continue to keep clear fallen leaves off lawn to keep it healthy.
• Collect and shred leaves/ dead plant for mulch material. Oak, alder and hornbeam will rot in one year.
• Spread fresh manure across your vegetable garden.
• Encourage hungry birds into your garden by investing in heated birdbath and feeders. Our feathered friends will keep pest down and bring joy on a bleak winter’s day.
• Protect roses from wind rock by pruning them back by one-third to one half in height.
• Remove fallen leaves from around the base of any rose bush which suffers from blackspot or rust this summer.
• Prune apple and pear trees anytime between now and February.
